Adding a lastmod date tells Google when pages were last updated. Only use "Today" if you're actually updating your site today. Otherwise, leave it out.
Where to put your sitemap.xml
Upload sitemap.xml to the root of your domain: it must be accessible at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Then submit the URL in Google Search Console under Indexing → Sitemaps. Also add a Sitemap: line to your robots.txt. See the Google Search Console guide.
What pages to include
Include every page you want Google to index: homepage, service pages, location pages, blog posts, about, contact. Exclude: admin pages, thank-you pages, login pages, duplicate content URLs, and any page with a noindex meta tag. See the robots.txt guide for the crawling side.
Does sitemap priority affect rankings?
Priority is a hint to crawlers about relative importance within your own site, not a ranking signal Google uses to rank you against other sites. Setting every page to 1.0 doesn't help; it makes the signal meaningless. Use 1.0 for your homepage, 0.8 for key pages, 0.7 for blog posts.
Sitemap size limits
A single sitemap.xml file can contain up to 50,000 URLs and must be under 50MB uncompressed. If your site exceeds this, use a sitemap index file that references multiple sitemaps. For most small business sites (under 200 pages), a single sitemap is all you need.
